Ruby Sims was raised in Macon, Georgia. She attended school in Georgia County school system.
She graduated earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, with a minor in Chemistry.
She taught high school math in Macon, Georgia.
She received a National Science grant to attend graduate school at the University of Oklahoma.
In 1966, she relocated to California, where her brother, Benjamin, was stationed in the Air Force.
She helped Benjamin and Liz, her sister-in-law, take care of their two children, Sheryl and Michael.
When her German Shepherd “ate up” all her money from the grant and teaching job, she went to work at Libby’s. Her job in Quality Control was to test if the catsup was too thin.
She took tests with the federal and state governments, where her test results showed that she was strong in abstract thinking.
She received her first job offer with Caltrans in 1968 as an Applied Science Programmer. She left Caltrans in 1978 and worked at the Department of Energy until 1987. She subsequently returned to Caltrans as an Associate Programmer Analyst and worked until her retirement in 1996.
She returned to Caltrans in 1987, in the CADD unit, using Fortran and C languages.
