Mamie Serena Dennis-Hawsey, known to family and friends as “Aunt Mamie” a long-time resident of Sacramento, California passed away on December 18, 2019 at the age of 95.
Mamie was born on June 5, 1924, to parents Walter Dennis and Naomi Anderson-Dennis in Southpark, Kansas. She had 4 sisters and two brothers.
Having a spiritual mother as a child and teenager, Mamie attended the Metropolitan Spiritual Church of Christ in Kansas City, Missouri. Upon arrival to Sacramento, She joined the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. Mamie loved watching spiritual programs and praising the Lord daily.
Mamie had a passion for children and caring for her nephew Herschel Smith until his passing. She truly loved her family, the caregivers who assisted her over the years, and her dog Lola. She lived in her home in Sacramento since 1947.
Mamie worked various jobs over the years, including being a housekeeper, nanny, in-home child care provider, warehouse worker driving forklifts during World War II and operating a barber/beauty shop with her husband Randolph Hawsey.
Mamie spoke proudly about her time as a ballroom dancer with an all-black dance troop that broke down racial barriers at the Sheraton Hotel, Zanzibar Hotel and Momo Lounge in Sacramento.
Mamie leaves behind great-nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Services will be held on Monday, December 30, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Thompson Rose Chapel LLC, located at 3601 5th Ave, Sacramento, CA 95817. Per her request, Interment will be at Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes, 4701 Marysville Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95838. Following her wishes, there will be no repast.
